Apthorp is a Wellington-based design studio run by Sally Apthorp, that specialises in creating thoughtful and contemporary spaces.
From renovations and extensions to complete new homes, each project is individually crafted with a full understanding of the client’s brief and vision, to deliver achievable, affordable, and beautiful outcomes.
Starting with a concept design right through to contract administration and site observation, we can provide a full creative service. We collaborate closely with our clients to create beautiful spaces that respond to the unique needs of their lifestyles.
Building or renovating a home can be a daunting undertaking. Apthorp Architecture & Interiors can simplify and manage the process for you, so you can move forward with confidence and excitement.
We start with a meeting on site where we discuss your aspirations for the project and how we can design to meet your lifestyle and needs. We talk through the potential of your site or home, as well as your budget, programme and any other requirements, to inform the project brief and the scope of architectural services you require.
While developing design concepts may be one of the more familiar aspects of our architectural services, we can assist you with your building project every step of the way to ensure the best possible outcomes.
Apthorp can provide the full scope of architectural services, including:

A New Zealand Registered Architect, Sally is passionate about taking an artistic but pragmatic approach to design. After practising abroad and in New Zealand, including at Collins + Turner in Sydney, MWAI in London, and Andrew Sexton Architecture in Wellington, she started her own Wellington-based practice in 2021.
While Sally’s professional experience spans a range of project scales and types; including commercial buildings, multi-residential apartment developments, childcare facilities, restaurants and bars, her passion lies in private residential architecture and interiors. Sally loves working closely with her clients to create spaces that resonate with their lifestyles and improve their everyday experience.
Sally holds a Master of Architecture from Victoria University of Wellington and spent time at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts School of Architecture in Copenhagen, where she further developed her appreciation for Scandinavian design sensibilities.
A passion for using humble materials in innovative ways and an innate connection to the natural landscape, resultant of her upbringing in rural Pahiatua, continue to influence her approach to architectural design.
